This hormone, potentially suitable as a novel target for the treatment of obesity and diabetes, Metrnl exerts these positive effects by activating the immune molecules interleukin-4 and interleukin-13, as well as the immune cells located in adipose tissue, macrophages.
Another study, published in the same journal, further uncovered questions about the immune response and obesity. A recent study by Ajay Chawla at the University of California, San Francisco, explored the activation of brown fat by the immune system in response to cold conditions. Now Chawla and his team found the basic "line" of beige fat activation in mice. They found that interleukin-4/13 signaling activates macrophages in white adipose tissue, resulting in the production of neuronal molecules needed to convert white fats to beige fats. These findings reveal important new insights on how the immune system and the nervous system work together to stimulate the formation of beige fats.
In addition, the researchers found that mice with impaired immune signaling generated less beige fat, had lower energy expenditure, and were unable to maintain their body temperature in cold conditions compared to normal mice. In contrast, treatment of mice with interleukin-4 increased the formation of beige fat, decreased body weight, and improved the metabolic health of obese mice.
